Enabling payday lenders to the online experience

Considering whether to become an online lender can be a daunting question.  We here about big successes and about huge failures all the time.  What is a lender facing this question to think?  Until just recently online payday lending has been more hampered by technology than experience and though online lending does create a somewhat different business model than lending through a store front, successful online lending strategies are being made and implemented every day.
I have worked with numerous payday loan companies from providing consultive expertise to strategy and build-out.  Each has had their own vision, but many of the key factors are very constant.  I would like to hear about your personal experience here and also ask you what would make the online lending experience better, more profitable, more predictable?

You know, I've thought about getting into online payday lending myself as I build the Empower database. I think one of the most basic steps is to find a software application that can handle the entire business process. Its my belief that MUCH of the online lending risk is mitigated when you adopt a stable payday lending platform. The reason why I say that is because if you can't keep track of your dollars on the street, and loose count of your borrower's paycheck dates your going to see MASSIVE collections and default numbers. From what I understand, online payday lending is about EXECUTION - being able to execute all your ACH payments on-time, and using your underwriting software correctly. If you can use technology to ease the pain of these two factors, profitability is almost surely found in the states you choose to originate loans in.

I worked with a payday lender with 47 brick-and-mortar stores.  Together we established two internet payday loan companies, one offshore and one in the U.S.  Profits were huge.  Huge.

Of course, it's a big commitment -- licensing, compliance; and some states don't allow it at all.  And of course, there's your capital to consider.  You will have a higher delinquency rate that your B&Ms.  That's just how it is.

As a consultant to the collection industry, I can help you plan and implement just such a strategy.  If you're interested, you'll find my company, VISTA Consulting at www.vistaknows.com.  Please feel free to contact me for a free initial consultation.

Thanks
